HMRC Issues Warning About Covid-19 Scams

HMRC has updated its guidance information in relation to false communications to include many of the latest Covid-related scams. The coronavirus pandemic is creating a climate of anxiety where people are vulnerable to scam communications claiming to offer financial relief or important information.

The government have warned of a rise in communications claiming to be from official organisations. HMRC issued an email cautioning: “If someone gets in touch claiming to be from HMRC, saying that financial help can be claimed or that a tax refund is owed, and asks you to click on a link or to give information, such as your name, credit card or bank details, please do not respond.”

Contractors may be vulnerable to scam texts and emails claiming to be from HMRC that appear legitimate. Many contractors will be completing their tax returns or inquiring about the government relief on offer during the pandemic. They should be extra cautious about any communications asking them to reply to texts, telephone calls and emails.

If you receive correspondence that seems suspicious, you should report full details of the suspected scam by email to: phishing@hmrc.gov.uk before deleting the correspondence. If you’re worried that scammers might have already gotten hold of your details, then this useful guide tells you how to report a scam and get your money back.
