New Government Scheme Will Help Jobseekers

A new government scheme launched on Monday will help jobseekers find work. Job Entry Targeted Support (JETS) is aimed at helping those out of work for more than three months because of Covid-19. The scheme will provide them with coaching and advice on moving into "growing sectors" as part of a £238m employment programme.

JETS is aimed at helping adults beyond the age of 25 learn how their skills can be redeployed in parts of the economy with skills shortages, such as construction and social care. The Department for Work and Pensions says it’s recruiting an additional 13,500 work coaches to help deliver the new scheme.

UK unemployment has now risen to its highest level for two years according to official figures. Mr Sunak commented that it was his priority as Chancellor is to extend opportunity to as many people as possible. “I've spoken about the damaging effects of being out of work,” he said, “but through JETS we will provide fresh opportunities to those who have sadly lost their jobs, to ensure that nobody is left without hope".

This month the furlough scheme ends and will be replaced on November 1st by the government's new wage subsidy programme, the Job Support Scheme. Nearly three million workers - or 12% of the UK's workforce - are currently on partial or full furlough. The wage subsidy programme will see the government help to top up the wages of those in viable jobs to at least three-quarters of their full-time pay.
