Where to Find Work Post-Lockdown

According to the latest jobs market report, the number of job vacancies in the UK fell by 62.7% in the second quarter of 2020. For those jobs that are being advertised, competition is stiff, with the average application-to-job ratio rising by 84%. Although there’s further sobering news that one in three companies are planning redundancies by the autumn, there’s also an increase in the number of businesses who are hiring. Here we take a look at the latest work opportunities across the UK.

From software engineers to web developers and online security specialists, the IT sector is expanding. Digital skills are required in all industries, from e-commerce to automating processes in factories, and demand is pushing up earning potential. IT professionals will be critical for many firms as they adapt to meet the challenges of a changed market. Fintech skills are particularly sought after as more services are digitised in the finance sector. Covid-19 has shown that the number of people managing their finances through online banking and mobile apps has massively increased, as has the use of online payment platforms for internet purchases.

Meanwhile, delivery company Hermes is creating 10,500 jobs as it looks to hire 1,500 full-time staff across its delivery network and head office, plus 9,000 freelance couriers. There’s also been an increased demand for groceries with pubs and restaurants having been closed during lockdown, and this has seen a knock-on in jobs demand. Between them, supermarkets have taken on more than 50,000 workers during the coronavirus outbreak, with both temporary posts and full-time positions available.

Large goods vehicle drivers are in high demand according to the latest REC survey. Whether it’s taking stock to an Amazon warehouse or making deliveries to individual supermarkets, goods are being moved by road. Last winter, trade body the FTA warned there was a shortage of 59,000 drivers in the country. There’s also a shortage of engineers who can build and repair these vehicles.

With the Chancellor confirming funding for the green homes scheme on the 4th August, there’s also hiring growth in the construction sector, particularly for contractors with knowledge of renewables. More green opportunities are available in regional pockets, such as 100 positions with Selkirk energy provider People’s Energy. New to the market, the company provides gas and 100% renewable electricity to UK domestic and SME customers. With the news this week that BP will halve its oil and gas production within a decade and shift its focus to renewables, this is an area for energy contractors to watch.

Here are some of the companies that are advertising 50 or more UK roles on their websites according to LinkedIn. (Last updated on 7 August)
